  1. Penny Calder says:

Something no-one seems to mention about pet insurance is the ongoing liability for the premiums over the rest of the year. After the death of my pet, my insurer – Marks & Spencer Money – deducted the remainder of the premiums for the year from the cheque they sent to cover the euthanasia and cremation expenses. Is it standard practice? If so, why not add a warning to your information?I

  2. Denise Forrester says:

I have found M&S pet insurance great. One thing my vet warned me when taking out pet insurance was to make sure I had lifetime cover as so many have a limit on how long they will treat an animal. M&S was the best price and cover for this type of cover.

M&S Pet Insurance have been great! We have had to claim twice for our puppy and both times they have made the whole process easy. Excellent value especially as they provide ongoing cover with no limit.

my premium renewal has just come in today…£233 per month or £2800 for the year. For my 8 year old Leonberger dog that has been insured with them since he was a puppy. When i first took out policy it was £15 per month, he then developed Epilepsy when he was 2. Yes they have paid out for his meds each month..but this is what they want from me now. I think this insurance is good, in regards to that they pay out, but at a price. I cannot afford to pay £233 per month now, i cannot get insurance anywhere else for him, so that only leaves one thing that i can do…M&S care, they say in their advertising, well they don’t care about my dog..they only care if your dog is fit and healthy and you dont need to make a claim!

  5. Margaret Hellicar says:

I have had the same experience with premiums increasing exponentially. It was a good deal to start with – at £9.47 per month in 2006 – but it increased a lot suddenly after the first couple of years and I have just had my renewal for this year and they want £67 per month! 7 x the original premium! My dog has had a couple of operations and they have paid promtly, but I just can’t afford this any more. When I called to ask about the increase last year I was told it was just based on the type/sex/age of dog – I said if this was the case then the premium should have been the same as for a new quote on the website – which it was not! After a letter of complaint they called me and the person I spoke to admitted it was based on the individual dog and would not budge on the premium. So be warned – if you make a claim your premium will rocket. I am now having to try to find cheaper cover for a nine year old dog when I had hoped to be able to stay with the same company all my dog’s life – thay’s why I took out ‘lifetime’ cover with what I thought was a reputable ‘household name’. Something should be done to stop these insurance companies luring you in with cheap start off prices then increasing them as they want when they know they’ve got you and it’s hard for you to change.Yes, so much for ‘caring’.

been with M&S since 2004 with our dog. Intially attracted by no excess policy. This was soon to go and since then premiums have gone up and up now over £600 a year. Made a claim in 2007 for bowel obstruction caused by foreign body and had diarrhoea in 2005. Because of this I now fear I cannot switch insurers. I am aware you must ring them if emergency arises out of hours with your pet, but hardly something you think about doing in an emergency, but they won’t pay out if you don’t. They have paid up when I have claimed without any hassle which I suppose is what counts. We have premium cover , did give us the option of switching to standard but said we could not go back up to premium. AS dog now 6 years I guess we will stay with them as more likely they will be paying up as he gets older !!
